Chest Inflammation
Important Information about Chest Inflammation
When people have chest inflammation, it would be common for the problem first to be recognized by some degree of chest pain. Of course, many people immediately think they are having a heart attack when they feel pain in the chest area but in truth, inflammation and pain can be caused by a wide range of reasons. Some of these causes are minor and some, just like a heart attack, serious.
If there is chest inflammation anywhere within the chest cavity, pain would likely result. This means swelling of tissue or organs would create pain. For example, if the tissue around the heart were inflamed or even infected, a condition called pericarditis would likely be the culprit. Typically, pain felt with this condition would be directly in the middle of the chest area.
Additionally, chest inflammation could be associated with organs within the chest cavity such as the lungs. If you were suffering from pneumonia, the lungs would be inflamed. Because the lungs would also be filled with some level of fluid, sharp pain, especially when coughing, sneezing, or inhaling deeply would be felt. Even people with asthma would experience some degree of chest inflammation and when the passageways to the lungs swell, breathing would be difficult and the individual would cough and wheeze.
If you are an active person, you could even have chest inflammation from an injury. As an example, let us say that you were playing football. Taking a hard hit to the ribs, even if none of the ribs were broken, tissue around the ribs would be impacted. Therefore, swelling of this tissue, specifically muscles and tendons would be the problem. In this case, chest inflammation could also affect the area where the ribs connect to the sternum or breast bone, which is a condition called costochondritis.
Other common causes of chest inflammation include shingles, which is also a very painful disease. Interestingly, shingles are linked to the Herpes virus but in this case, the outbreak of sores usually affects the back and chest. In addition to inflammation, shingles cause a tingling sensation and again, they are extremely painful, even with treatment.
A more serious condition involving chest inflammation is the forming of a blood clot within a lung. This type of clot is known as a pulmonary embolism and if not taken care of on an emergency basis, it is life-threatening. Then, pleurisy, or chest inflammation involving the lining around the lung could also be a problem. Just as with all the other situations, pleurisy can also produce sharp pain, making it difficult to cough, sneeze, or inhale deeply.
While chest inflammation is usually nothing too serious, any persistent or sharp pain in the chest needs to be addressed. You know the old saying, “Better safe than sorry” and in this case, it would apply. All you need to do is call your doctor if you experience chest pain so chest inflammation, infection, disease, and other problems could be identified and properly treated.
